Microsoft Office Groove is a one of the programs from the Office suite that not many people know about.
Groove is a useful application that allows you to create a workspace for collaborating with other team members.
The thing that differentiates Groove from other online project management solutions (which I’ll blog about in the near future), is that instead of hosting the workspace on a web site, Groove stores the workspace content on your local workstation and then replicates that workspace content to the workstations of the other workspace team members. This is known as peer-to-peer technology.
You can download a free trial of Microsoft Office Groove and have a play with it, but if you decide that you want to use it, then you’ll have to whip out that credit card and say goodbye to $229 if you buy it from the Microsoft web site, or $189 if you buy it from Amazon.
I recently came across a freeware alternative which works with the same peer-to-peer replication model, allows you to create unlimited workspaces, create notes, discussions, links, tasks, and add attachments. It also allows you to do basic instant messaging between other workspace members who are currently online.
The product is called Callanos Workspace, and is worth taking a look at for the creation of simple collaboration workspaces.

It looks like Microsoft is pulling this down. The reason being that in a corporate environment it would be way to easy for people to hide stuff in this password protected folder. There also is no recovery options. I personnaly like it and if you can’t remember the password then don’t use it!!!
Microsoft has released Private Folder 1.0 for Windows XP SP2. This free product (that is not supported) allows users to lock a folder with a password to a folder called My Private Folder. Passwords for this folder must be 6 - 16 characters long and can only contain letters and numbers…for some weird reason symbols are not included.
The folder remains unlocked for 5 minutes of idle time before you must enter your password again. That threshold can be configured from 3 minutes of idle time to never (thus you would have to manually lock it).
Using Microsoft Private Folder
After your reboot you will have an icon on your desktop called “My Private Folder”
If you double click this icon you will be prompted for your My Private Folder password. Once you enter the password you can view the contents of the Microsoft Private Folder.
You will also be provided with an icon for Microsoft Private Folder in the lower right corner by your clock. It looks like an unlocked padlock.
If you right click this icon you can lock your Microsoft Private Folder when you are done using it.

The American software company Microsoft is embracing Norwegian internet search technology. At the beginning of January, the company bought Fast Search and Transfer (FAST).

18/01/2008 :: “FAST is a world leader in business search solutions based on the best business search technology, and we are world leaders in the field of productivity-enhancing software. We are convinced that the combination of our strengths will give our business clients a competitive advantage,” says Microsoft Norway’s Head of Communications, Eirik Lae-Solberg, to the Norwegian online newspaper digi.no.
“This acquisition gives FAST an exciting way to spread our cutting-edge search technologies and innovations to more and more organizations across the world,” says John Markus Lervik, CEO and founder of FAST, in a press release.
FAST develops search technology for businesses, databases and the internet. The company was established in Trondheim in 1997, and today has 500 employees spread all over the world. Microsoft has paid NOK 19 per share, giving the company a value of NOK 6.6 billion.
Norwegian companies are at the forefront of internet technology, and particularly the development of multi-functional web- and intranet sites, fast web browsers, online games and e-business solutions.
