Making sure you’ve got a reliable backup solution is a must for any user – and more so for an administrator. Why? Well, mostly because your users probably aren’t very good at remembering to back up their own files. And so it falls to you to provide the right software for the job!

Backup software is a difficult category to tackle nowadays as the distinction between backup and synchronization apps has become a little blurred. Prices being what they are, my personal choice is to use external or removable hard drives for my backup chores – my current favorites are Bonkey and Cobian.

To make sure you’ve got plenty of options to choose from, I’ve split this list into three different categories so that you can choose from the options that are best suited to your environment.

Integrated Burning

Comodo Backup [win]
They do make than a great firewall. Comodo Backup is an excellent free solution. It has extremely flexible scheduling and notification options, supports FTP destinations, can burn multisession DVDs, and has a synchronization mode for quick realtime backups.

DFIncBackup [win]
As is the case with most backup applications, there’s a free and paid version. The free one still handles CD/DVD backups, and it also does incremental .zip jobs as well – only backing up files that have changed or weren’t present in your previous job.

SE Backup [win]
Sports a very simple interface, does CD and DVD burning and compression, and is available as a portable application. Scheduling isn’t built in, but it supports command line launching with parameters which works very well with Windows’ own Task Scheduler.

File Copy

Abakt [win]
Though it’s no longer developed, Abakt is still a great choice. It’s got a great file filtering system, supports 7zip and zip compression, file splitting, password protection, and does differential and incremental backups.

Areca [win]
Free, open source, and wicked powerful. Areca is loaded with features: compression, encryption, simulation, merging, transaction commit/rollback, filtering, and more. It’s command line interface provides excellent automation options and Areca also supports scripting of post-job actions.

Bonkey [win] [mac]
The “Backup Monkey.” If I was giving points for best mascot, this one would be a clear winner.

Bonkey runs on both Windows and Mac, and has a lot of great features. It supports email, FTP, and Amazon S3, compression, encryption, scheduling, and synchronization. It’ll even back up MS SQL server databases.

Cobian Backup [win]
Apart from being a great application, Cobian’s developer has an excellent tutorial online to help you get started. Though it is no longer open source, you may still download the last version that was (v8). There’s also a portable version.

One of my favorite features of Cobian is its ability to handle pre- and post- job events. I use it to issue net stop and net start commands to ensure safe backups of our horrible, horrible point-of-sale system. Cobian also has the ability to control and monitor all its instances on your network from your own workstation.

JaBack [win] [mac]
Allows backup to FTP and email (as well as any drive on your computer or network), and sports a flexible scheduler. It also has a file monitor function that will perform backup operations whenever changes are detected.

Mathusalem [mac]
Offers FTP/SFTP, Amazon S3, WebDav, and SMB support for backups on OSX. Mathusalem can compress to zip and dmg, will resume failed uploads, and supports scheduling and command line launching. It’s also open source.

Server-Based

Bacula [win] [mac] [linux]
Bacula is an enterprise grade network backup solution that runs on just about every platform imagineable. It’s a much more complex system than the other options I’ve mentioned, but is extremely powerful and well-suited to a medium or large scale network.

BackupPC [win] [linux]
A Linux-based, client-free enterprise solution for backing up Windows and Linux machines. BackupPC uses SMB, tar, and rsync to extract backup data from client computers. It ‘s got a powerful web-based interface for administrators and users, and will even email reminders to users that have been remiss in performing backups.

It’s a very flexible solution, and is open source.

NasBackup [win] [linux]
Uses a simple Windows GUI and rsync to perform backups from client machines to a central server. It’ll do incremental backups, scheduling, compression, encryption, and the server offers useful per-client controls like limiting the number of versions to store and expiration dates. It also provides daily summaries via email.

Restore [win] [mac] [linux]

This is in reponse to Ssnobben’s posts titled “Having a slideshow module in main page” and “Slideshow on frontpage”

How this is done?

Embedding a module inside a content page is a Joomla “feature”. You do not need the DirectPHP plugin to enable this.

Ssnobben has rightfully pointed out you need to use something like “{loadmodule mod_fpslideshow}”. So below are the complete steps to achieve this.

Note that the steps below applies to Joomla 1.0.x only. For Joomla 1.5.x, please refer to How to include modules in Content item (for Joomla 1.5.x).

Step 1: Create a new module position

First, we need to create a new module position where this module will be placed.

1. From the “Site” menu, select “Template Manager” then “Module Positions” as shown below:



2. Add a new module position “user201″. You could give it any name. I named it “user201″ in this example.



3. Click “Save” to save the new module position.

Step 2: Create the content page

We will now create a content page for containing the module.

1. Go to Content Manager and create a new article (static or dynamic).
2. In the article, enter the following:

This is a test to include a module inside a content item.

{mosloadposition user201}

3. Note that the module name after mosloadposition has to match the module position you have created in Step 1.

Step 3: Set up the module

In this step, we need to do some setting so that the module will appear in the module position.

1. Let’s first create a module for testing purpose. Go to “Modules – Site Modules”. Look for the module “Main Menu”. Check the box besides the title, and choose “Copy” from the menu.



2. You will see a new module called “Copy of Main Menu” appearing below the original “Main Meu”.



3. Click on “Copy of Main Menu”.
• Set “Show Title” to “No”
• Select “user201″ for Position
• Set “Published” to “Yes”



4. Go to “Page / Items” on the right-hand side and make sure “All” is selected:



5. That’s it! Save the module. We’re all set!

Step 4: Let’s test it

Now load the article. Did you see the “Main Menu” appearing inside that article similar to the following?

Note: If you wish to put this as the front page, go to Menu Item Manager – Main Menu, create a menu item linked to this content page, then move it to the first item. The content page with the embedded module (for example, it could be a slideshow module) will become the front page.

One of the frequent questions that we receive at Joomlaspan is “How can I include your AdSense *, AdBrite *, and Paypal * modules within the content of Joomla 1.5?”

We have given individual customized answers to many users, but this article will make it very clear and accessible to everyone.

Let’s take one example, our Google AdSense module. This can be placed in any module position of the template by default, but not within content. This tutorial shall now explain how to enable it (or any other module) within content in Joomla! 1.5.

STEP 1: Create a new copy of the Module just for in-content use.

Extensions > Module Manager. Check the checkbox before the module in question and click on “Copy” on the top right (see image).

The copy is placed just under the original in the same module position and is unpublished by default. It will be named “Copy of …”.

STEP 2: Open the Module that you just copied.

Now just click on the name of the module (Copy of …).

STEP 3: Change the “Module Position”

Here, we are going to do something very sleek. With the module opened, look at the left side of the screen. You will see a parameter named “Position”. It will have a dropdown combobox in front of it. Joomla! developers have hidden a truly powerful option here. It is “editable”. See picture on the right to get a clear idea. So what? Read on…

Let’s edit the position name and “create” a new unique position just for in-content use, which will not be shown on the template elsewhere. Do not click on the arrow, but click directly within the textbox of that field and “delete” the content (using delete or backspace key). Now type a new name, let’s say content_adsense125 (You can type any name you want, but this to me means that I am using this for showing AdSense ads, 125×125 size for in-content use).

Look at the next picture below for what it will look like. After making the other necessary changes to the module parameters on the right side, “Save” the module. This will now be saved in the “new” position that you just created.As it is a custom position, it will not show on the frontend. That was our purpose too, we want it to show only within content and only where we assign. See the right side ads for an example.

STEP 4: Go to the Plugin Manager

Extensions > Plugin Manager. Look for a plugin named “Content – Load Module”. Open it. On the right side, you will see a dropdown box. Click on its arrow and select “No wrapping – raw output” as shown in the next picture.

STEP 5. STEP 6, STEP 7…

Open your content item within which you want to show the module. In the desired location within the article, just type

where”loadposition” is a constant to call the plugin that we just edited in step 4 and “module” is the variable module position to be called, in this case we should change it to content_adsense125 as done in step 3. As indicated above, change only the blue text and leave the red untouched.

Just one word of caution, do not use standard positions like “left” or “user1″ inside content. They may load ALL the modules in that position into that content.

From now on, you should be able to place any module in any content of your choice. Please let us know if you get into any trouble with these steps. We will be glad to help.

It’s hard to define design. We have a broad range of definitions to choose from: design refers not only to graphic design, but to design strategy, too. It is used in a variety of industries, such as engineering, architecture and Web design.

This means that design is not just graphical in nature (which is a form of visual artistic representation), but also the planning of processes to achieve certain goals. Large corporations clearly understand this and incorporate every form of design into their strategy to achieve success.

For a good corporate design, we need to be aware of two main elements, which can be further broken down into a total of seven “ingredients”:

• design, as in artistic representation (logo, typography, colors), and
• design strategy (brand, quality, community, culture).

1. Logo

Typically, a logo is designed for immediate recognition. Users often identify a corporation by its logo. Just look at the above images: the names of the companies should immediately pop into your head.

But a logo is only one aspect of a company’s brand strategy. It helps, of course, to differentiate a company from its competitors, but a great logo doesn’t mean anything until the brand makes it worth something. If you’re given the task of creating a logo for an organization, create an abstract image that is clean, simple and carries very little meaning until the brand of the organization adds that meaning. 2. Typography

A well-proportioned, clean font can make all the difference on a website or even a corporate flyer. Good typography creates that “There’s something about that” feeling in people’s consciousness.

One of the most successful fonts that can be seen everywhere (signs, buildings, planes, etc.) is Helvetica. This is the King Kong of typefaces, and it’s more than 50 years old. Helvetica changed the world of typography. It showed typographers and graphic designers that simple is good.

Large corporations tend to adopt clear sans-serif typefaces. A typeface should reflect the company’s image and beliefs. If a company is a little conservative, then it should use serif typefaces, such as Times New Roman: these typefaces reflect classical designs. With the help of large typography, an organization should enhance the motto or message delivered to its users.

All website text, not just for corporate websites, should be readable. A Web designer should take into consideration the different browser rendering engines; text fonts are not displayed the same across browsers.

With large corporate websites, usability plays an increasingly large role in typography design. A company should also care about its users with disabilities who can only read with the help of a screen reader, etc. It isn’t always a good approach to embed text in images and not include tags, because screen readers can’t read the text. Sadly, the majority of large organizations are still struggling with this issue.

3. Colors

A graphic designer usually should be careful when designing the visual identity of a large corporation. We should take into consideration different color combinations, color meanings and color theory.

The corporate color scheme that the designer chooses makes a strong statement about the organization and how it does business. As with all of the other seven elements, colors should emphasize the philosophy and strategy of the corporation.

Research conducted by the Institute of Color Research reveals that all human beings make a subconscious judgment about a person, environment or item within 90 seconds and that that assessment is based on color alone. This demonstrates the important role of colors in corporate graphic design.

Enter the world of color harmony and palettes. There are lots of useful online tools for creating beautiful, appealing colors, such as COLOURlovers, which showcases color trends and palettes.

One particular tool is interesting for the technological point of view behind it. Apparently, our brains did not evolve to see or appreciate the concentrated and saturated colors that are considered “basic colors.” Our eyes evolved to see natural and sophisticated colors that rarely clash with each other.

4. Brand

Brand is the definition of corporate business. The name of an organization can also serve as its brand. Brand value reflects how a company is perceived in the marketplace. Brand identity communicates an organization’s strategy in a universal way to target audiences.

Branding is not about getting a target market to choose one corporation over its competition, but about getting prospects to see the corporation as the only one that provides a solution to their problems.

A company should lay down brand objectives from the beginning. These are the organization’s characteristics, and they must reflect the organization’s philosophy, processes, image, etc. A strong brand builds credibility and motivates clients.

5. Quality

Quality is one of the most important elements. It defines a company through its policies, procedures and responsibilities to its users. A company that offers quality products or services has a great chance of bringing a user back not just once but many times over.

Quality should be reflected in every aspect of a corporation: how it does business, the kind of products or services it produces, how it handles its prospects and clients. The same is true for the corporation’s website design, too.

6. Community

Many large corporations tend to neglect this aspect of their business. The first large company that recognized this important element was Apple. It created a dedicated, enthusiastic community around its products, which eventually paid off in the long run.

It’s not an easy task to form enthusiastic communities and to leverage that power. A company should always keep in mind that without quality products or services, it can’t project a positive image to its user base.

One way of forming a community is by recruiting company product evangelists. Evangelism is a form of word-of-mouth marketing in which a company nurtures customers who strongly believe in the company’s products, with the result that these customers actively promote them and try to convince others to buy and use them. These people often become the key influencers in the community, and because they’re not paid or affiliated with the company, they are perceived by others as being credible.

Let’s take Apple’s example and find out the three steps of creating a community:

• As a first step, which is the most important one, it creates quality products that are targeted to a specific audience.
• It encourages customers to meet and share, as is the case with iPods.
• It focuses on specific key aspects of the product and associates them with the company’s philosophy. In Apple’s case, that aspect is a better user experience.

7. Culture

When speaking of culture, one shouldn’t take it to mean community. Culture is the tastes, manners, knowledge and values that are shared and favored by the community. If a corporation has communities formed around its products, it doesn’t necessarily mean that these communities have a healthy culture. In fact, a bad culture can ruin a company’s reputation with future prospects.

Microsoft is, sadly, a good example of bad community culture. This culture is mainly the result of the company’s policies and how it has nurtured its community. On the other hand, Apple created a relatively healthy community by enveloping its products in mystery and rumor. Think of the long lines in front of Apple stores around the US, Europe and even Asia, anxiously waiting for the iPhone. The customers even called it the iLine.

In recent years, not only have cultures formed around Apple products, but subcultures have, too. Subcultures around product rumors have resulted in many websites, such as MacRumors.com and AppleInsider.com.

I didn’t want to slap large banners or the like and I remember seeing those page peel adverts and thought it could be a good compromise, when you Google ‘page peel script’ all I seemed to find was a paid version on a long copy type sales page which immediately put me off.
However after searching for a while I found a FREE page peel script at Webpicasso, you can see it in action on BCC148, let the page load and look up in the top right corner. Not overbearing and better than nothing, an excellent free script.
